We understand that caring for a dependent family member or loved one can leave you with very little time for yourself. Our Carers’ Break service gives you the chance to take a well‑earned break, knowing your loved one is safe and well looked after. You can use this time to go out, run errands, or simply stay at home and relax with a book — whatever helps you recharge.
Our volunteers provide the Carers’ Break service. They are local people who want to give their time to support their community, and they bring a wide range of experiences and interests. Our Coordinator takes great care to match each person with the right volunteer.
After we receive a referral, our Community Visiting Coordinator will visit you to explain the service and learn more about your situation and the interests of the person you care for. We then match you with a volunteer, and the Coordinator will return with them to make the first introduction.
Your volunteer will come to your home and spend time with your loved one. They can chat, make a hot drink, join in with activities the person enjoys, or simply be a reassuring presence while you take a break. Visits usually last 2 hours each week or fortnight, depending on what works best for you. Volunteers will have your contact details while you are out so they can reach you if needed.
All volunteers provide references and complete a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.
There is no charge for this service. Please note that volunteers cannot provide personal care, financial or legal advice.
You can refer yourself or make a referral for a family member, friend, or someone you care for. We also accept referrals from voluntary organisations and statutory services.
